How to manage your time when Studying Abroad

Vol.1: Food

Espcially in these challenging times, we feel we are sometimes trapped in the cycle of study (work), eat, sleep, repeat. Many students find it very difficult to find time to manage their time and all the tasks. Especially for students budget is another stressful restraint and they might find themselves living on a combination of burgers and rice that is not at all nutritious, but also extremely boring.

STUDY, EAT, SLEEP, REPEAT

These are some of our friend´s ideas and suggestions about how to eat healthily and quickly while staying on a budget. They have all gone through the same as you and did find a couple of tricks and tips that do work well! You can also check some of the Online Open Days that our friends attended before choosing their degree.

Guillermo  – I am such a pasta-eater…

and I was so broke during uni that I practically became Italian in my cooking. I made sure to stay healthy by buying a lot of fruits and veggies (which are also very cheap) and eating those for supper and breakfast. Then I would have different sauces ready so that I did not get bored about pasta (normally, macaroni). Some weekends, when I felt motivated, I´d cook a massive pot of sauce so that I had enough for several days, but normally I´d just buy sauce pots in the shop.

Gabriela – When studying abroad, you have to accept that some days you have to cook, but you can skip others.

So whenever I cooked, I was making salad, soup or fish and whenever I didn´t have time I went for fast food. The proportion of healthy and fast-food would vary, obviously, but it kept me happy and healthy while on a budget.

Elisa – The secret for me was always eating with friends and flat-mates.

Each one of us only got to cook once or twice a week, but we always had fun lunchtimes. And you must always remember that microwave and oven are your best friends. Whenever you are hungry, and nobody is cooking, you can use your secret weapon: the pre-made oven-heated pizza.

Miguel – I learnt how to make many easy-dishes while studying in Sweden at Linköping University.

For example, burritos and toasts have close to zero preparation time, so you can eat while cooking and save some time and money. Also, having a protein shake in the morning does give you plenty of energy and calories for the day, and it is easy and not very expensive.

Hector – I didn´t have any time during weekdays and I knew I had to spend money on food, so I learnt a saving trick:

every Sunday I made vegetable pure… a ton of pure, that would last me for the whole week. Then, I didn´t have to spend as much money every day since the first dish I already had. If you have a healthy and full diet in the morning and midday, you can afford to eat fruit for dinner, also.

Linda – I am a vegan, and that means it is very cheap for me to eat!

As a student, I found out that veggies are very, very cheap, especially if you buy big quantities. I used to boil veggies and eat them with rice, or make pure, toasts and many more! The secret to the flavor is adding tomato sauce to any vegetable stew.

Sarah – You should start your day great.

Even when you think you don´t have time, you should pay special attention to breakfast. My trick was making a great warm bowl of porridge with fruits and some milk. It is the best way to start the day with a lot of energy.

We hope that some of these tricks will help you stay fit and on a budget while allowing you to have ample time for studying or enjoying your time. Do not forget the motto: Study, Eat, Sleep, Repeat. You will find a balance after some thought. After all… you only Study Abroad once!

Are you a student ready to go Study Abroad but still undecided about the destination?

Today I’m going to give you 5 reasons why you should choose Denmark as your study destination. Over the years, Denmark has become a well-appreciated destination for students who are looking for career opportunities and exciting study programs.

Before going deeper the explanation of the 5 reasons to study in Denmark, I’ll give you some general information in order for you to have a better idea of this land located in the North of Europe. Denmark, also called the Kingdom of Denmark, is a Nordic country and the southernmost of the Scandinavian ones. The capital, Copenhagen, is the largest city as well as the commercial centre. Government and national parliament are all based in the capital. Denmark, with a population of 5,814,461, is not a huge country, but it has been recognized as one of the most economically and socially developed countries in the world.

All right, it’s time to discover why you should choose Denmark where to study!

1. High-rated Universities

Denmark is hosting high ranked universities. If you are looking for a study program abroad, I strongly suggest taking a look at the universities based in Denmark.

Check out our Online Open Days and discover the top universities in Denmark

Above all, the educational system is pretty efficient. Moreover, I’d underline many institutions have embraced new ways of learning. For this reason, students are generally more willing to participate actively during lessons, as well as being more focused and interested. More specifically, Danish schools and universities have generally introduced practical sessions, clearly combined with theoretical ones. Thanks to this, you will be able to obtain a degree that also has practical know-how. Because of this, your study will give you an in-depth understanding of the field you’ve decided to focus on.

2. International Environment

Most of the universities in Denmark are internationally oriented. That means you’ll feel extremely comfortable studying and living there. Clearly, you need to be familiar with English!! Besides, universities and institutions are very open to welcome students from abroad. Danish Universities usually plan orientations days and welcoming weeks to make you feel right at home Its good to try and join these events. This way, you will be able to meet new students, new friends, as well as figuring out the new environment. Check our Online Open Days from Technical University of Denmark! You will get useful information about study programs and related tuition fees, schedules and career opportunities. Of course, nothing comes for free! If you are ready to go studying abroad (particularly in Denmark), remember to put your own effort and energy into this experience.

Combining the international “mindset” of the Danish educational system with your strong spirit, you’ll be easily able to incredibly experience life abroad in Denmark.

3. Scholarships & fair living costs

I often hear friends and people around me wondering how to get scholarships. Many universities around the world are not that willing to offer scholarships. But for Denmark it’s different! Many universities offer scholarships, grants, and financial aid to help fund your education. Keep in mind you won’t find scholarships available for international students. However, there are other ways to get scholarships related to your goals and needs.

DTU University, for instance, offers a partial scholarship for students ready to start in the next September intake.

For more information, register now to the Online Open Days and find out DTU University based in Denmark. Taking into account living costs, Denmark has specific standards and regulations for European students. For instance, if you are a European student you can have free Denmark tuition fees by covering the following requirements:

  • Get a Permanent residence permit
  • Get a Temporary residence permit and upgrade to a permanent one afterwards.
  • You have a Parent from a non-EU/EEA country who is already working in Denmark

Finally, the living costs you will support are around 700 – 900 EUR monthly in smaller towns. In larger areas, like Copenhagen, living costs could reach up to 1200 EUR a month.

4. Good & happy life standards

Denmark society is constantly promoting events and social interactions. Thanks to this, you will find a friendly and happy social environment where you’ll meet new cultures, people and habits.

And trust me! I’ve experienced several situations and lifestyles abroad… You have to embrace the challenge of studying abroad. Doing that will help you in a million different ways. You will discover yourself, find new friends (from around the world) and places. Moreover, you will improve your knowledge and create a million great memories that you can share with your friends and family at home.

Denmark might be the right place for you where to Study Abroad.

Universities are usually great at planning events taking place away from campus. You can spend countless hours exploring Danish architecture, food culture and nature. Go explore this beautiful country

We’ve said a bunch of times, Study Abroad is one of the best experience you can do in your life. I know, it’s not an easy choice to take for you and your parents. Moreover, there are many things to take into consideration, and the fear of leaving your comfort zone might be quite heavy.

Here in this blog post, I’ll give you 10 reasons why you should decide to Study Abroad.

Okay, let’s start!

1. Discover the world

I decided to start with this reason because I personally think that study abroad gives you a huge opportunity to discover the world. Our planet is full of opportunities, amazing spots as well as people. By studying abroad, you’ll have the chance to travel and fill up your soul with fascinating worldwide experiences whatever destination you choose.

Keep in mind: world is huge! You’ll find out something new that will help you in several aspects. Above all, you know how is it cool to tell your family ad friends all experiences you’ve done during your period abroad? I strongly think this represents such a great feeling and sensation.

travel abroad

2. Learn & improve your language skills

When you decide to go studying abroad, you also need to consider that it represents a way to learn and improve your language skills. Over the previous blog posts I’ve written, I’ve always underlined the fact an English knowledge is always required. So, if you are willing to study abroad, make sure to have an acceptable level of English. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an English expert! However, it’s better to have skills that enable you to establish a basic connection with people around you.

Now the good thing comes! I’ve personally experienced that it’s quite easy to improve your language skills. Why? Because starting for day one you’ll start speaking a language different than your native one. And because of this, I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to improve your skills after 3 or 4 months living abroad.

As you are an expert in the English language, why don’t you start learning a new language? This is a huge opportunity you won’t probably have in your country anymore. I give you an example.

If you’re studying abroad in Spain, try to start learning Spanish by meeting new locals. However, you can also decide to take some Spanish classes in order to have a language base. Mixing theoretical and practical ways, you will easily learn a new Idioma super useful for your personal and professional career.

3. Embrace diversity

The third reason I’ve decided to mention is based on the chance to embrace diversity. In my opinion, this is a golden reason that should push you to study abroad.

In fact, when you are in another country you’ll be surrounded by people from worldwide countries. And that’s amazing! By doing this, you’ll hug the diversity and will learn thousands of new cultures. This will help you to evaluate past, present as well as future situations and facts.

Finally, it doesn’t’ matter where you go; you have the opportunity to embrace diversity in every single place.

4. Meet new people

When you go studying abroad, it’s crazy the number of new people you’ll meet. Moreover, it’s quite easy to meet and make new friends. Why? Because most of them are in the same situation as you. For this reason, after a couple of days of adjustment, you’ll build new relationships. I’ve personally experienced there is no day where you cannot find new people. So, don’t worry; you won’t be alone!

5. Build network connections

Super related to the reason above, meet new people means building up network connections. In fact, when you meet someone, you basically create a strong personal and professional network. And network connections enable you to be constantly in contact with people from all around the world, sharing then ideas, memories and opinions. And who knows! Those network connections might be “useful” for you in the future. I explain better myself by giving you an example.

You’re 40 years old and about to start a 3 weeks trip to South America. When you were studying abroad you met friends from that area. This gives you the opportunity to call them and plan a throwback reunion. You’ll meet friends again as well as getting useful tips for your trip. Such a great thing no?

6. Support your professional career

When you go studying abroad, it means study a Master/Bachelor or eventually do an Erasmus. For this reason, you’ll be able to firstly improve your know-how and secondly your CV. Nowadays, companies are way more willing to consider people with experience abroad. Above all, wherever you decide to work, the experience abroad will give you a huge gap in terms of finding a job, in comparison with people who decided not to do it.

Learn more about finding a job while studying, read our Blog Post!

Remember to take a look at our Online Open Days, find out the right studying program for you!

7. Find the study program that fits your need the best

In many cases, study abroad means also find the study program you weren’t able to find in your country. Here you have my witness: one of the reasons that pushed me to study abroad was actually the fact I found the right master for me out of my country.

If you have difficulties in finding a bachelor or master in your own land, don’t be afraid to check out something abroad. The Study Abroad Portal team is always involved in providing students with innovative study programs abroad. What are you waiting for?

Check out now our portal, watch Online Open Days for free, and apply to the right university for you.

8. Open to new challenges

Study abroad gives you also the chance to open yourself to new challenges. No matter how long you will live out of your country. This experience will push you to find new challenges and to leave your comfort zone behind.

Just experiencing life abroad, you’ll figure out how it will improve your mindset in facing new horizons.

9. Discover yourself

Moreover, the student’s life abroad has nothing to compare to the one that you could have in your country. You live alone, in a new context with new people and surroundings. All this enables you to discover yourself, your soul and feelings. I honestly think you’re able to fully discover yourself only by having an experience abroad, far from home and ordinary boundaries.

10. Personal experience

Finally, I’d underline that as (and if!!) you decide to come back home, you will be so full of personal, interpersonal and professional experiences that will surely help you in your future life. You’ll instantly see benefits in relation with your friends, family, colleagues as well as with yourself.

Concluding, now that I’ve given you the 10 reasons to study abroad, I hope I’ll sell you the right motivation to consider the chance to go abroad.

Now it’s time to find the study program that fits your needs the best

So you think you are done with Uni. But beware, University is not done with you. At some point, they will invite you to a graduation ceremony. What is it? Why does it exist? What do I do? Do not fear, let us tell you all you need to know to survive your graduation ceremony.

What is a Graduation Ceremony

The graduation ceremony, or convocation, is a relatively long celebration in which the official representatives of a university hand out the diplomas to the University, Masters or Doctorate students (hopefully, after all the exams are over, and they are finishing their degrees). Although American high schools also celebrate it, convocation is strictly a University celebration that dates from the medieval era in Europe.

Now… Saying that a graduation ceremony is just a boring event will make you miss some of the detail and fun that you can have there. But also, it is quite a complex manoeuvre itself. We are therefore going to describe the steps of any graduation ceremony for you to be ready to survive the last step of Uni.

Steps of any Graduation

  • Introduction – Just like anywhere else, things start in the beginning. Someone important (or, hopefully, a funny showman) will open the event that is devoted to students, their parents, and the university.
  • Speeches – Now, several people will get everyone´s attention. From the deans and professors to an especially renowned invitee, and even the students! This is a great opportunity to tone down the evening, with some student inside jokes or even criticism.
  • Diplomas – If you though the speeches were boring, beware: now every single student will be called up to walk through the stage and pick up the diploma. As you can guess, this can take up to two hours. This part of the ceremony, though, is famous for the pranks some students decide to play. But we´ll talk about those in a minute.
  • Farewell – this is probably the most emotional moment of the whole event. Not just because it´s finally over, but because you realize you are saying goodbye to the uni, the campus, the teachers, and many of your friends. Ultimately, you might be saying goodbye to your student life, which is -for many, the best period you get in life.

Now that you understand the steps of the graduation, let us point out what you should not miss!

Gaudeamus Igitur

Gaudeamus is a song (in Latin!) traditionally sang in graduations. Although it is the “official” anthem of universities (with its medieval origin and all), it is just an old drinking song that invites you to “enjoy life because it is too short” -or if you were paying attention in lit class, carpe diem. Some graduation ceremonies play it through the speakers while others hire choirs or ask the teachers and students to sing it. In my promotion, we were well aware of the origins and meaning and decided to sing it. It was a bit ridiculous and very fun for us. And professors were quite surprised.

Speech

Do not be discouraged by speeches: for some are actually very interesting. When the university invites a professional or academic to give the honorific speech, it is not about their achievements, but about life lessons. People go crazy about YouTube videos of celebrities and geniuses on graduation speeches, well go figure… you can attend one live!

Academic Regalia

As you probably know, the dressing code of a graduation ceremony is quite awkward… since it also dates from the medieval time. It is all about uniforming all students to give a clear message of “democracy and equality”.

So be aware, this is not about being the prom queen, but about showing belonging to your university, discipline and educational level. As a side note, you should contact older students to try to buy their used graduation clothes, because you can spend a lot of money on this otherwise. This is what you need to know!

Graduation Outfit

  • Grown/toga – is a large tunic you wear over your regular suit or dress. Be aware: OVER your suit. You will also have to look for a serious blazer jacket or nice dress and pair of shoes for the ceremony. This is normally black or blue, and the university will direct you to the proper model of the gown (the sleeves are different for bachelor, masters or doctorate students).
  • Hood or cowl – Goes over the grown and might show the distinct colours of the discipline you studied. If like me, you get lucky, you just get to wear your cowl over your suit and no grown (quite convenient). This is the colour code you must follow:

  • Caps, tassels and medals – Other accessories are the caps, medieval-like hats which also vary depending on hierarchy and discipline. We all know the stereotypical image of students tossing them in the air after graduation, and that is completely true. Even the tassel, or the “rivety” thread that hangs from the cap, must have its correct placement. Also, medals or other accessories might be worn.
  • Pranks – It has become quite normal to see students prank the teachers or the entire crowd while picking up their diploma. Everything from doing a backflip to revealing a fancy dress underneath the toga. Some universities embrace these practices, but most will take serious measures against this. Far from putting yourself in danger, while you perform your stunt you are clouding the next fellow´s minute of glory. As I explained before, this ceremony is all about equality. So if you want to be brave about it, I will not take responsibility! -but I hope you have fun.

But take a moment to think of what it means for you, and how proud you should be of yourself. If you managed to survive uni, it means our guide was helpful!
